In the BEST INTEREST of Students

With all of the changes and new ideas that come out each year in the area of education, I sometimes get confused about what is the "best" strategies to use/change.  Don't you?  Based on what I've read so far, this is a great book, written by one of my favorite authors and amazing educators, Kelly Gallagher.  Here is a link to the book and also to his personal website which includes some great resources: Personal Website:  Kelly Gallagher's Website

My Takeaways:

  • The Common Core standards WILL HELP with valid comparisons to be made about education across America.
  • The new standards promote RIGOR - a good thing!
  • ALL SUBJECTS should teach the value of writing and speaking
  • Each STANDARD shouldn't Matter, rather CORE LITERACY SHOULD.

The Standards in Reading:

  • Essentially, Standards 1-3 ask "What does the text say?"
      • Activities to promote these standards include: 17 word summaries, Write a Headline, Window Quotes, Digital Text Summaries, and Write & Reflect Before Group discussions. (page 18)
  • Standards 4-6 ask "What does the text do?"
  • Standards 7-9 ask "What does the text mean?"
